Students will work evolving groups as they move through the classroom.
Vocabulary
  1. penny
  2. nickel
  3. dime
  4. quarter
Materials
Signs numbered 1-5
Signs with 4 different coin names, quarter, dime, nickel, penny, taped to 4 traffic cones
Upbeat music
Coins
Tape
Markers
Give each student a coin.  
Have students stand next to the cone with their coin on it.
Review value of each coin with whole class.
Explain procedure- when music begins students move around the room using whatever motion teacher holds up. When music stops students get into groups of the displayed number. If teacher holds up 4, students get into groups of 4.
Start music on smartboard and after a time, stop music. Have students add their coins up using the Virtual Piggy Bank App.
Each group will share which coins they have and the sum value of their coins.
Assign a different motion and play again.
Differentiation
Preteach vocabulary, use visual aids and manipulatives, activate prior knowledge, use enlarged coin pictures on necklaces
Closure
Have students label 3 coin pictures and paste in math journal.
How much do these coins add up to? What have you learned today?
